In 2006, I began and continue to work on a series of abstract ceramic ‘Horse Trailers’; the process of which, has allowed me to return to the ‘clay life’ I once knew. This new approach to clay, is quite involved: Namely, the long drying time involving several month’s wait ( the plates are made of porcelain and are nearly an inch thick). The subsequent risk of cracking; the endurance of three to five firings of each plate - without complete loss to the kiln. The four plates shown here, are what remain of eight original plates. Note, that the ‘Orange Slider” is NFS as it had split down the middle and the pieces have been rejoined. It is a process which has yielded unexpected results. My plan is to continue working with clay and to continue this series. However, I will be using stoneware. While the ‘slabs’/Trailers will remain large in size, their thickness will be greatly reduced. I am anxious to continue this process, as I have many images awaiting translation.....
...so many, that this Spring, I decided to extend my endeavors by including 28 inch oils on canvas. This medium will allow me to further explore my desire to use and experiment with multi-dimensional layers of color, as I do with glazes on the plates.
As of date, I am loving the work, finding way to many ideas and not enough time to get all the work done. I am currently working on four to six oils at a time.
